Quick answer: Ontario’s student minimum wage applies to eligible students under age 18 who work no more than 28 hours a week while school is in session, or who work during a school holiday. The rate is $16.60 an hour through September 30, 2026 and rises to $16.90 on October 1, 2026. Other young workers generally qualify for the general minimum wage.

Who qualifies for the student rate?
The special rate is based on age, student status and hours—not simply on being enrolled in school. A worker must be under 18 and either work 28 hours a week or less while school is in session, or work during a school break. If a student works more than 28 hours in a school week, the general minimum wage normally applies for that week.

Example calculations
A qualifying 17-year-old who works 15 hours at $16.60 earns $249 before deductions. At $16.90, the same 15 hours produce $253.50. A 17-year-old who works 32 hours while school is in session should check whether the general rate applies.
Training shifts and meetings
Required training, opening duties, closing duties and mandatory meetings are generally working time. An employer should not ask an employee to clock out and continue working.
