Quick answer: You may work two jobs in Canada when your immigration status authorizes both jobs. An open work permit generally allows work for most eligible employers, subject to its restrictions. An employer-specific permit normally limits you to the employer, occupation and location listed on the permit.
Check the type of work permit first
| Permit type | Can you take a second job? |
|---|---|
| Open work permit | Often yes, for eligible employers and work allowed by the permit |
| Employer-specific work permit | Usually not unless the second job is separately authorized |
| Two valid employer-specific permits | Potentially yes, while following the conditions of each permit |
| Study permit with work authorization | Only within the student work rules and hour limits |
Working two jobs with an open work permit
An open work permit is not tied to one named employer. It can generally allow multiple jobs, but the permit may contain restrictions. Some employers are ineligible, and medical examinations may be required for certain occupations.
Read the conditions printed on the permit and review IRCC’s current open work permit guidance.
Working two jobs with an employer-specific permit
An employer-specific permit lists conditions such as the employer, occupation, location and validity period. Working for another employer without authorization can breach those conditions.
If you want to change or add an employer, you may need a new employer-specific work permit. IRCC explains that some eligible workers who applied from inside Canada may request authorization to begin the new job while the application is processed. Follow the official changing jobs or employers process.
Can you hold two valid work permits?
IRCC states that a person can hold two valid work permits at the same time, but must meet the conditions on each permit. This does not mean a worker can ignore conflicting schedules, occupational restrictions or expiry dates.
Important checks before accepting job two
- Read every condition on your permit.
- Confirm the second employer is eligible.
- Check whether the occupation requires a medical examination or licence.
- Make sure the schedules comply with provincial employment standards.
- Review tax withholding and keep both T4 slips.
- Do not exceed any separate student work-hour restriction.
- Keep copies of contracts, schedules and immigration documents.
Overtime when you have two employers
Employment standards are generally applied separately to each employment relationship. Hours from two unrelated employers are not automatically combined for overtime. Related employers and special arrangements can require closer review.

What happens if you work outside your permit conditions?
Unauthorized work can create immigration consequences and affect future applications. Stop and get reliable advice before starting a job that is not clearly authorized. A job offer does not itself change your permit conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can a PGWP holder work two jobs?
A valid post-graduation work permit is generally an open work permit, so multiple eligible jobs may be possible subject to the conditions printed on it.
Can I have one full-time and one part-time job?
Possibly, if your authorization permits both and you comply with employment, licensing and safety rules.
Can I start the second job while waiting for a new permit?
Only when you are legally authorized. Some eligible employer-change applicants can request interim authorization from IRCC; simply applying does not always permit the new work.
