PTE Core is one of the English language tests currently accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for PGWP language requirements.

The score you need depends mainly on the type of program you completed.

Some graduates need at least CLB 7 in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, while graduates of certain college, polytechnic and other non-university programs generally need at least CLB 5 in all four abilities.

This guide explains PTE Core for PGWP Canada in 2026, including CLB 5 and CLB 7 score requirements, accepted tests, result validity, field-of-study requirements, documents and common mistakes.

Important: PGWP rules can change and eligibility depends on more than your language score. Always verify your individual eligibility directly through IRCC before applying.

PTE Core for PGWP: Quick Answer

Yes, PTE Core is accepted for PGWP language proof. If you apply under the current rules, you must meet the required level in each of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing—not just the overall score.

Your completed program Minimum level in all 4 abilities
Bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral or other university program CLB 7
Other college, polytechnic or non-university program CLB 5

Check the applicable field-of-study rule as well. Your program type, the date you submitted your study-permit application and your full PGWP eligibility all matter.

Is PTE Core Accepted for PGWP in Canada?

Yes.

IRCC currently accepts PTE Core as an English language test for PGWP applicants who need to provide proof of language ability.

The accepted English tests currently include:

  • CELPIP-General
  • IELTS General Training
  • PTE Core

French-language options include TEF Canada and TCF Canada.

If you choose Pearson, make sure you take PTE Core.

PTE Academic is a different test and is not the PTE option listed by IRCC for the PGWP language requirement.

Who Needs a Language Test for PGWP in 2026?

If you apply for a PGWP on or after November 1, 2024, you generally need to provide proof of English or French language ability.

The main exception is for eligible flight-school graduates.

Applicants who submitted their PGWP application before November 1, 2024 were not subject to the newer language requirement.

PGWP Language Requirement by Program Type

Program Completed Minimum Language Level
Bachelor’s degree CLB 7 in all 4 English abilities
Master’s degree CLB 7 in all 4 English abilities
Doctoral degree CLB 7 in all 4 English abilities
Other university program CLB 7 in all 4 English abilities
Other college, polytechnic or non-university program CLB 5 in all 4 English abilities
Eligible flight-school graduate No PGWP language requirement

PTE Core Scores Required for PGWP CLB 7

If your PGWP category requires CLB 7, you need to meet the CLB 7 threshold in every individual language ability.

Ability PTE Core CLB 7 Range Minimum Required Score
Speaking 68–75 68
Listening 60–70 60
Reading 60–68 60
Writing 69–78 69

Therefore, the minimum PTE Core scores entering CLB 7 are:

  • Speaking: 68
  • Listening: 60
  • Reading: 60
  • Writing: 69

Who Normally Needs CLB 7 for PGWP?

Under the current rules, CLB 7 generally applies if you graduated from:

  • A bachelor’s degree program
  • A master’s degree program
  • A doctoral degree program
  • Another university program

You need to reach the required level in all four language abilities.

PTE Core Scores Required for PGWP CLB 5

If you graduated from an eligible college, polytechnic or other non-university program covered by the CLB 5 requirement, the current PTE Core conversion is:

Ability PTE Core CLB 5 Range Minimum Required Score
Speaking 51–58 51
Listening 39–49 39
Reading 42–50 42
Writing 51–59 51

Therefore, the minimum PTE Core scores entering CLB 5 are:

  • Speaking: 51
  • Listening: 39
  • Reading: 42
  • Writing: 51

Who Normally Needs CLB 5 for PGWP?

CLB 5 generally applies to graduates of eligible:

  • College programs
  • Polytechnic programs
  • Other non-university programs

Your specific program and PGWP eligibility still need to meet all other IRCC requirements.

PGWP PTE Core CLB 5 vs CLB 7

Ability CLB 5 Minimum CLB 7 Minimum
Speaking 51 68
Listening 39 60
Reading 42 60
Writing 51 69

You can see all current CLB levels in our PTE Core Score Chart Canada 2026.

Does Your Overall PTE Core Score Matter for PGWP?

Your individual skill scores are what matter when determining whether you meet the required CLB level.

Do not look only at your overall PTE Core score.

You need to meet the required minimum in:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

Example: CLB 7 PGWP Applicant

Imagine your PTE Core result is:

  • Speaking: 72
  • Listening: 65
  • Reading: 63
  • Writing: 67

Speaking, Listening and Reading meet CLB 7.

However, Writing 67 falls within CLB 6 under the current conversion table.

If your PGWP category requires CLB 7 in all four abilities, this result would not meet the language requirement because Writing is below the minimum score of 69.

Example: CLB 5 PGWP Applicant

Imagine your result is:

  • Speaking: 54
  • Listening: 43
  • Reading: 46
  • Writing: 56

All four scores fall within at least CLB 5.

If your program requires CLB 5 and you meet all other PGWP eligibility requirements, these language scores would satisfy the language-level portion of the requirement.

Do You Need CLB 9 for PGWP?

No.

CLB 9 is not the general PGWP language requirement.

The current PGWP minimum is generally:

  • CLB 7 for degree and other university programs
  • CLB 5 for other college, polytechnic and non-university programs

CLB 9 is more commonly discussed by people trying to increase language-related points for Express Entry.

If your longer-term goal is permanent residence, you may still decide to aim higher than the minimum PGWP requirement.

Can You Use a Higher PTE Core Score Later for Express Entry?

PTE Core is also accepted for Express Entry.

If your results remain valid and meet the requirements of your immigration program, the same test result may potentially be useful later.

However, Express Entry requirements and competitive CRS targets can be much higher than the minimum language requirement for a PGWP.

Read our Express Entry Canada 2026 guide.

How Long Are PTE Core Results Valid for PGWP?

IRCC currently requires your language-test results to be less than two years old when you submit your PGWP application.

Check the date of your test carefully.

Do not assume that a result is valid simply because it was taken during your studies.

Does Your PTE Core Test Need to Be Taken in Person?

IRCC’s current PGWP document guidance says accepted language tests should be taken in person.

PTE Core is taken at an authorized Pearson test centre.

It is not an at-home online test.

If you have not booked yet, read our How to Book PTE Core in Canada 2026 guide.

What Proof of Language Results Do You Submit?

If the language requirement applies to you, you need to include proof of your language results with your PGWP application.

IRCC notes that the PGWP document checklist may display language proof as an optional document.

However, if language proof is required for your program, you still need to include it.

Do not leave it out simply because the upload field appears under an optional section.

Which English Tests Are Accepted for PGWP?

IRCC currently accepts:

  • CELPIP-General
  • IELTS General Training
  • PTE Core

If you are deciding which test suits you, read:

PTE Core vs PTE Academic for PGWP

PTE Core and PTE Academic serve different purposes.

PTE Core is Pearson’s general-English test used for applicable Canadian immigration, citizenship and PGWP language requirements.

PTE Academic is mainly designed for academic admissions and other routes where the Academic test is specifically accepted.

For PGWP language proof, IRCC currently lists PTE Core.

Always double-check which test you are booking.

Do Bachelor’s Degree Graduates Have a Field-of-Study Requirement?

Under the current PGWP rules, graduates with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or doctoral degree do not have a PGWP field-of-study requirement.

They still need to meet the applicable general and language requirements.

Do Other University Graduates Have a Field-of-Study Requirement?

If you graduated from another university program, the language requirement is currently CLB 7.

If you submitted your study permit application on or after November 1, 2024, you may also need to have graduated from an eligible field of study.

Do College Graduates Have a Field-of-Study Requirement?

If you graduated from another college, polytechnic or non-university program, your minimum English language requirement is generally CLB 5.

If you submitted your study permit application on or after November 1, 2024, you may also need to meet the PGWP field-of-study requirement.

What Is the PGWP Field-of-Study Requirement?

For applicants who are subject to this rule, the program must correspond to an eligible six-digit Classification of Instructional Programs code.

This is commonly called a CIP code.

The eligible fields are connected with occupations facing long-term labour shortages in Canada.

Important 2026 PGWP Field-of-Study Update

IRCC states that the list of eligible PGWP fields of study is frozen for 2026.

This means IRCC does not plan to add or remove eligible fields of study during 2026.

If the field-of-study requirement applies to you, check your exact six-digit CIP code rather than assuming eligibility based only on your program title.

How to Find Your Program’s CIP Code

You can:

  • Check your school’s website.
  • Contact your designated learning institution.
  • Use the Statistics Canada CIP classification.
  • Check your code using IRCC’s PGWP field-of-study tool.

Program names can be similar while having different CIP codes, so verify your exact program.

Does Everyone Need the PGWP Field-of-Study Requirement?

No.

Current exemptions include certain applicants such as:

  • Bachelor’s degree graduates
  • Master’s degree graduates
  • Doctoral degree graduates
  • Eligible flight-school graduates
  • Applicants whose study permit application was submitted before November 1, 2024

Always check IRCC because your individual dates and study program matter.

Are Flight-School Graduates Required to Take PTE Core?

Eligible graduates from PGWP-eligible flight schools are currently exempt from the new PGWP language and field-of-study requirements.

They still need to meet the specific flight-school and general PGWP eligibility rules.

Does Graduating From a DLI Automatically Guarantee a PGWP?

No.

Graduating from a designated learning institution does not automatically make you eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.

Your school and specific program need to meet PGWP eligibility requirements, and you must satisfy the other rules that apply to your situation.

Other Important PGWP Documents

Language results are only one part of the application.

IRCC may also require documents proving that you completed your studies.

Examples include:

  • Official letter from your school
  • Official transcript
  • Copy of your official transcript from your school’s website

Your documents need to come from a PGWP-eligible designated learning institution and program.

Proof of Full-Time Studies

IRCC may require proof that you maintained the required full-time student status during your program, subject to applicable exceptions.

An official transcript can help demonstrate your enrolment history.

Review your complete PGWP eligibility rather than focusing only on the language score.

Can You Work While Your PGWP Is Being Processed?

Some graduates can work full-time while IRCC processes their PGWP application.

IRCC currently says you may be able to work full-time while waiting for a decision if, when you submitted your application:

  • You had a valid study permit.
  • You had completed your study program.
  • You were eligible to work off campus without a work permit while studying.
  • You did not work more hours than you were permitted to work.

Your personal situation matters, so verify the current IRCC rules before beginning or continuing employment.

How Should You Prepare for PTE Core CLB 5?

If your PGWP target is only CLB 5, do not ignore any skill.

You still need to meet the threshold in all four abilities.

Focus on:

  • Basic grammar accuracy
  • Common vocabulary
  • Clear pronunciation
  • Listening for everyday information
  • Reading comprehension
  • Spelling
  • Typing accuracy

How Should You Prepare for PTE Core CLB 7?

CLB 7 requires stronger performance.

Build your preparation around:

  • Speaking fluency and pronunciation
  • Repeat Sentence practice
  • Reading Fill in the Blanks
  • Vocabulary and collocations
  • Write Email
  • Grammar
  • Write from Dictation
  • Listening accuracy

Should You Aim Higher Than Your PGWP Minimum?

If you only need PTE Core for your current PGWP application, meeting the required CLB level is the immediate goal.

However, a higher result may be useful if you expect to use PTE Core later for an economic immigration program such as Express Entry.

Your long-term target should depend on your immigration strategy.

What If One PTE Core Skill Is Below the PGWP Minimum?

If one required ability is below your minimum CLB threshold, you do not meet the language requirement in all four abilities.

For example, a CLB 7 applicant with strong Speaking, Listening and Reading but Writing below 69 would still be below CLB 7 in Writing.

Do not rely on your overall PTE score to compensate for a lower individual result.

Can You Retake PTE Core?

Yes.

If your result is below your required PGWP level, you can prepare and take PTE Core again under Pearson’s current retake rules.

Review your weak skill first instead of immediately booking another attempt.

Read our PTE Core Results 2026 guide for information about results, retakes and rescoring.

Graduates of other eligible college, polytechnic and non-university programs generally need CLB 5 in all four abilities.

For PTE Core, the minimum scores entering CLB 7 are Speaking 68, Listening 60, Reading 60 and Writing 69.
