Change Employers on a Closed Work Permit Canada 2026: PPCHANGEWORK2020 Guide

Job applicant reviewing an employment document with a recruiter

Quick answer: A closed or employer-specific work permit normally authorizes work only for the employer and under the conditions printed on the permit. To change employers, you usually need to apply for a new work permit. Eligible workers already in Canada may request authorization to start the new job while the application is processed.

Worker preparing documents to change employers in Canada

Step 1: Get the new job documents

The new employer may need a positive LMIA, or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment number submitted through the Employer Portal. Your application must use the documents appropriate to the job and exemption.

Step 2: Apply for a new work permit

Apply from inside Canada if you are eligible. Upload the job offer, LMIA or offer number, status documents and other evidence requested in your personalized checklist. Keep the submission confirmation.

Step 3: Request interim work authorization

After applying, use the IRCC web form and paste the exact message for changing jobs or employers. The official instructions use the code PPCHANGEWORK2020 at the beginning of the request so IRCC can identify it.

Do not start immediately

Submitting the application or web form does not itself authorize the new work. Wait until IRCC emails you confirming that you may begin working under the new conditions. Keep that message with your permit and application receipt.

If you have already stopped working

You may remain in Canada according to your valid temporary status, but you cannot work for the new employer without authorization. If your current permit is expiring, submit the correct application before expiry to protect your status.
