Maintained Status Canada 2026: Can You Work After Your Permit Expires?

Temporary worker reviewing expired SIN and work permit extension documents in Canada

Quick answer: If you apply to extend your work permit before it expires and remain in Canada, you may have maintained status and may usually continue working under the same conditions until IRCC decides the application. The exact conditions depend on your permit and application.

How maintained status begins

Your extension application must be received before the permit expires. IRCC uses Coordinated Universal Time for online submissions, so do not wait until the final evening. Save the submission confirmation and payment receipt.

Can you keep working?

If you met the requirements, you can generally continue working under the conditions of the expired permit while remaining in Canada. With an employer-specific permit, that normally means the same employer, occupation and location shown on the permit.

What proof can you show an employer?

  • Your expired work permit
  • IRCC application confirmation
  • Payment receipt
  • The work-authorization letter in your online account, if issued
  • IRCC’s official maintained-status webpage

What happens if you leave Canada?

Travel can affect your ability to work when you return. You may be admitted as a visitor and be unable to resume work until the new permit is approved. Entry is always assessed at the border. Get current advice before travel.

What about an expired SIN?

Your SIN record may show an expiry date linked to your immigration document. IRCC states that eligible workers can continue working under maintained status even if that date has passed. Update the SIN after receiving the new permit.

If the extension is refused

Your authorization to work ends when IRCC refuses the application. Restoration may be possible in some cases, but restoration does not automatically authorize work. Stop work and obtain qualified advice quickly.

Read IRCC’s official work-permit expiry guidance. See our detailed expired SIN guide and PGWP waiting-period guide.
