Express Entry Categories 2026: Eligible Occupations and Rules

Quick answer: Canada’s 2026 Express Entry category-based selection includes French-language proficiency and occupation-based categories for healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport. It also includes categories connected to physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience, plus skilled military recruits.

Express Entry categories announced for 2026

IRCC’s current category-based selection page lists these categories:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • Science, technology, engineering and mathematics occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Education occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Physicians with Canadian work experience
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  • Researchers with Canadian work experience
  • Skilled military recruits

Eligibility details and occupation lists can change. Use the official IRCC page when making decisions.

How category-based selection works

You must first qualify for at least one program managed by Express Entry: the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program. You then create a profile and enter the pool.

In a category-based round, IRCC identifies candidates who meet the category’s requirements and ranks eligible candidates by Comprehensive Ranking System score. Meeting a category does not remove the need to be eligible for Express Entry.

Does category eligibility guarantee an invitation?

No. A candidate can meet a category and still not receive an invitation. IRCC decides when to hold rounds, which category to target, how many candidates to invite and the cut-off score. Profiles must remain accurate and valid.

French-language category

The French category is based on minimum French test results specified by IRCC. Candidates still need Express Entry program eligibility. Use approved test results and confirm that they remain valid on the date required.

Occupation-based categories

Healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport use official occupation lists and work-experience requirements. Your job title alone does not establish eligibility. The lead statement and main duties of your NOC must match your actual experience.

Use our NOC and TEER guide to compare duties, then verify the code against IRCC’s category table.

Canadian-work-experience categories

The physician, senior-manager and researcher categories introduced for 2026 include specific Canadian work-experience conditions. Do not assume that any healthcare, management or research job qualifies. Check the listed NOCs and the required experience period.

Skilled military recruits

IRCC also lists a category for skilled military recruits. It is narrow and connected to recruitment by the Canadian Armed Forces for specified roles. General foreign military experience does not automatically create category eligibility.

Category draw versus program draw

Round type Main selection filter
Category-based Category eligibility, then CRS ranking
Canadian Experience Class Eligibility for CEC, then CRS ranking
Provincial Nominee Program Provincial nomination, then CRS ranking
General or other program round Requirements stated in that invitation round

How to check your eligibility

  1. Confirm eligibility for an Express Entry program.
  2. Identify your correct NOC using actual duties.
  3. Open IRCC’s current category table.
  4. Check the category’s occupation, work-experience or language rule.
  5. Confirm dates, hours and location of qualifying work.
  6. Keep documents that support the information in your profile.
  7. Check official rounds instead of relying on social-media predictions.

CRS score still matters

Category-based selection does not eliminate CRS. IRCC ranks eligible candidates in the selected category. Improve factors that are accurate and realistic, such as language results, education documentation, eligible work experience or a provincial nomination.

Read our Express Entry Canada guide, use the CRS calculator, and review ways to improve a CRS score.

Frequently asked questions

Can I qualify for more than one category?

Yes. A profile may meet multiple categories when all requirements are satisfied.

Do I need a job offer?

A job offer is not a universal requirement for category-based selection. Your underlying Express Entry program and individual circumstances determine what is required.

Will the categories stay the same all year?

Government priorities and detailed lists can change. Check IRCC before assuming a category or occupation remains active.
