To reach CLB 9 with PTE Core, you must meet the minimum score in each individual ability. An overall PTE result does not replace the separate reading, writing, listening and speaking requirements used for Canadian immigration.

Why CLB 9 Matters for Express Entry
CLB 9 can be important because language points rise and strong language results may unlock higher skill-transferability points when combined with education or foreign work experience.
Your full CRS result also depends on age, education, Canadian experience, spouse factors and additional points. Use our Express Entry CRS calculator to compare different language scenarios.
Do You Need CLB 9 in Every Ability?
If your goal is to receive the CRS treatment associated with CLB 9 across all abilities, yes. One lower ability remains at its lower CLB level even if your other scores are high.
For example, reading 80, listening 84 and speaking 85 meet CLB 9, but writing 86 is CLB 8. You should enter each result separately when calculating your score.
Does PTE Overall Score Matter for Express Entry?
IRCC uses the converted level for each language ability. Do not rely only on an overall PTE score or an average of the four results.
Which PTE Test Is Accepted?
For Canadian economic immigration programs that accept Pearson testing, use PTE Core. PTE Academic is a different test and should not be substituted when IRCC requires PTE Core.
How Long Are PTE Core Results Valid?
Language test results used for Express Entry generally need to be less than two years old both when the Express Entry profile is created and when the permanent-residence application is submitted. Always verify the current instructions in your IRCC account and on Canada.ca.
How to Improve Toward CLB 9
Reading: Target at Least 78
Practice locating meaning quickly, recognizing paraphrases and managing time across reading tasks. Review why wrong options fail rather than memorizing answers.
Writing: Target at Least 88
Writing has the highest CLB 9 minimum among the four abilities. Practice clear sentence structure, grammar, spelling and task completion. Leave time to check names, dates and instructions.
Listening: Target at Least 82
Build accurate note-taking and spelling. Short daily dictation practice can help you notice function words, endings and number details.
Speaking: Target at Least 84
Prioritize clear, continuous speech instead of rushing. Record practice responses, check pauses and pronunciation, and repeat difficult sentence patterns.
Should You Aim Above the Minimum?
Yes. A test-day margin is safer than consistently scoring exactly at the threshold. A practical practice target is several points above each minimum, especially in writing and speaking.
